We’ll soon know who Bruce Arena thinks gives us the best shot to beat Panama and Trinidad and Tobago and save our asses from a summer without a World Cup appearance. Last night on USfanTV we gave our picks–not on who we’d like to see, as we always say–but on who we think Bruce will take to Orlando and Trinidad.
Here’s who we think will make the team:
GOALKEEPERS (3): Tim Howard, Brad Guzan, Nick Rimando
DEFENDERS (8): Jorge Villafana, DaMarcus Beasley, Geoff Cameron, Matt Besler, Omar Gonzalez, Tim Ream, DeAndre Yedlin, Graham Zusi
MIDFIELDERS (8): Darlington Nagbe, Fabian Johnson, Michael Bradley, Dax McCarty, Kellyn Acosta, Alejandro Bedoya, Christian Wonderboy™ Pulisic, Paul Arriola
FORWARDS (4): Clint Dempsey, Jozy Altidore, Bobby Wood, El Wondo
So, absolutely no surprises. Now, we picked 23, but Bruce has been going more like 25 or 26 at recent camps, so we might see Eric Lichaj or Jesse Gonzalez or Cristian Roldan back in the mix. But we don’t think we’ll see anyone like Matt Miazga or Weston McKennie, despite their impressive form in Europe. Danny Williams is another guy who deserves to be there, but he recently picked up an injury. And, Jordan Morris is hurt, so that means Wondo.
So are you confident in this group? I think they can get it done, but they were so bad last time out I’m not sure of anything, anymore.

In other news, our boy Pulisic will be on 60 Minutes this Sunday night. They do fantastic work, so we should learn a thing or two about him. As we’ve said many times before, Pulisic is insanely polished in front of TV cameras for a guy so young. He’s not as good as someone like Altidore or McCarty who both know how to inject humor at the right times, but Pulisic can string interesting sentences together and never sounds stupid, which puts him in the 99th percentile for athletes his age.
And FIFA is out today! I already played it for a few minutes this morning, enough to have scored a goal with Pulisic. We’ve already complained about his 78 rating, but on top of that, his face still doesn’t look right. Maybe better than the Pete Sampras-looking version of Pulisic in FIFA 17, but still not right.
Oh, well. They’ll finally get it right when he’s on the cover, I’m sure.
One final note: We have USfanTV t-shirts for sale! You can buy one here from our friends at Bonfire, but only through October 11. Then, they’re gone forever. And if, for some reason, we don’t hit the minimum sales order, you won’t be charged for the shirt. They’re available in grey, red, white and blue. We make a tiny fraction off each one, which we’ll use to pay for things like website domain names and microphones. So go buy several and help support the show!
See you Tuesday night. Do or die week is almost here.
